Summer is a great time for a cold beer, and everyday is a great day for artisanal cheeses. So for our latest Virtual Yelp Event and Elite Experience, we created – what we think is! – the perfect pairing: Allagash Brewing Company and The Maine Cheese Guild!
Our pairings included:
1. Nowaday – a refined Belgian-style blonde ale brewed like a lager – paired with cheese curds by Silvery Moon at Smiling Hill Farms in Westbrook; cheesemaker Dorothee Grimm called in all the way from Germany to talk us through the process of making her poppable curds!
2. Little Grove (with peach and kombucha) – a sparkling session ale brewed with fruit and boasting only 100 calories per can – paired with a dill havarti by Crooked Face Creamery in Skowhegan; cheesemaker Amy Rowbottom shared of how she started “making cheese in an old jail building” and it was truly an amazing story!
3. Tripel – brewed with Allagash’s 2-row barley blend, hopped with Nugget and Hallertau, then fermented on their house yeast and coming it at a whopping 9% ABV – paired with Terzetto by Winter Hill Farms in Freeport; cheesemaker Sarah Wiederkehr told us how she makes the cheese by dunking it in barrels of Allagash beer!

Yelpers loved hearing from a strong panel of women whose passion for their respective crafts was palpable even across a digital space. Local Yelp Elite, Eric S, wrote “This event was one of my favorite Yelp events yet and by far my favorite Zoom event during these COVID times over the last year! I loved the candid comments by the speakers and learning about the beers, the cheeses and their businesses, as well as other tidbits about the cheese making process (and Allagash insights) I never knew.”
