As the weather begins to heat up around here, so does the Chowder and Clam Cakes. Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial beginning of summer and with that comes the opening of some of our favorite seasonal spots; Clam Shacks. Here in the ocean state, we sure do love our clam cakes & chowder and depending on who you ask, they will most likely tell you a different spot to try, as we all have our favorite shack we swear by.
What is a clam cake you ask? It’s the clam-studded sibling of a beignet and a hushpuppy, and is ideal for dunking in either clear Rhode Island-style or creamy New England clam chowder. Some locals prefer them crispy, some like them softer, others like them with big chunks of clam inside, and some like small bits mixed in with the dough. The one thing that we can guarantee, is that no matter where you go, we know you will fall in love with them.
“Clam cakes are delicious balls of golden fried clammy-goodness!” – Michael P. Yelp RI Community Director.
We created a collection especially for you, with some of the Top Clam Shacks from around the state. We will highlight some of them below, but we suggest bookmarking a few from the list, so that you can get a true taste of this Rhode Island summertime staple.
Dune Brothers – Dune Brothers is the product of two long-time friends who share a passion for the food and culture of where they grew up in coastal New England. Dune Brothers brings a chef-driven, dock-to-dish approach to Rhode Island and they source their products from the waters and earth of New England, forging relationships with fishermen and farmers that are equally passionate about the East coast. Want the Inside Scoop? We heard they are opening up a brand new location on North Main Street in Providence. Stay tuned for more info!
Monahan’s Clam Shack – Monahan’s, also known as The Clam Shack By The Sea is located in the picturesque beach town of Narragansett Rhode Island and is situated at the famed Narragansett Seawall. Enjoy a cup of chowder, clam cakes and the panoramic views of the ocean.
Blount Clam Shack On The Waterfront – Todd Blount loves Clam Shacks! The Warren Clam Shack was his opportunity to create an authentic clam shack, using his family business’s generations of experience in seafood procurement and show off his location on the Warren, RI waterfront. He could not get permits for a permanent structure on the waterfront; so this location has a combination of food trailers and tents for a true waterfront experience.
Iggy’s Doughboys & Chowder House – A Rhode Island dining landmark with two fabulous locations. Iggy’s has been awarded Best Clam Shack honors from Rhode Island Monthy and featured nationally on CBS’s The Early Show as their pick for the Best Clam Chowder as part of their: Taste of America.
