To celebrate National Pet Day, we invited Ultimutt K9 Services to give Yelpers a crash course in dog training.
Jeremy “Bear” Kern is a former firefighter who broke his back on the job. He was shocked to learn how much it costs to train and certify a service dog he now needed. From that experience, he now helps others to develop their service dog’s skills to match their needs.
Bear walked us through some key commands. Bear is a firm believer in praise over treats. He showed us key techniques for using a slip-leash, and talked over some advantages of e-collars.
We were able to see dogs at different skill levels perform some commands. Bear demonstrated how his own service dog helps him up when he falls. He also brought out a puppy, new to training, to demonstrate how to use a slip leash combined with leash tension and hand gestures. The facility was also looking after a surrendered dog, and Bear showed our Yelpers how to reduce its aggression towards other dogs. Finally, Bear’s assistant and her dog Kiwi demonstrated the “off” command for over-excited pups who jump.
We had lots of questions and Bear had answers. Yelp Elite Frances G. said, “This was a great event and I got some takeaway techniques to use and got to learn about a business in the area I had no clue existed! For training or grooming this will be the spot!”
Our Yelpers also had fun seeing each other’s dogs on the Zoom call!
Ultimutt K9 Services generously gave away a series of two 1:1 training lessons, as well as a grooming, to two lucky Yelpers.
