Most cities or states with shelter-in-place orders allow folks to enjoy some outdoor time as long as they practice appropriate social distancing. Even better? There are ways you can enjoy outdoor time while supporting local businesses and your communities, too!

Before engaging in any activity, be sure to check recommendations from your local officials and guidelines from the CDC. Be sure to give each other space, avoid crowded areas, and stay as close to home as possible.
The most obvious may be the most beneficial: take a hike. While it’s tempting to stay on our couches all day binge-watching TV in our pajamas it’s important to keep moving. And not just for your physical well-being. According to a study by researchers at Stanford University, spending time outdoors can calm anxiety, reduce stress, and lead to a lowered possibility of depression.
There are tons of hidden gems out there in your neighborhood where you can find some solitude. Many local parks, hiking and biking trails, and more can all be found on Yelp. Want to help others? Be sure to review your favorites and add photos to help others find their outdoor outlets, too!
According to the CDC, “studies have shown that the bond between people and their pets can increase fitness, lower stress, and bring happiness to their owners.” Dogs are great motivators to go for a walk through your neighborhood or toss a ball around in the backyard. Some cats even enjoy leashed time in the yard with grass between their toe beans.
Right now, many shelters are still open for businesses and taking adoptions. If you’ve been on the fence about bringing home a new furry friend, now may be the perfect time. By helping an animal in need you’ll also be helping yourself. Find a local shelter and reach out to see what their current policies are.
While most eateries are closed to dine-in customers, many are still offering delivery and carry out options. As the days get warmer, now is the perfect time to support a local business and plan a porch or yard picnic. Many breweries, wine shops, and bars are also offering curbside bottle pick up and can help you pair the perfect beverage with your food order. Find a delivery or takeout place and help support the businesses in your community while enjoying a meal in the comfort of your own yard.

With the first day of spring behind us, many of us are seeing new plant life surface. So, why not coordinate with your neighbors and set up a time to work in your individual yards by cleaning up and planting together (but apart)? Gardening is great exercise; pulling weeds, raking, and bending while digging can all help with strength, stamina, and flexibility. And seeing your neighbors from a distance can help boost your mood. Not to mention, your home and block will look all the better for it!

Find a local shop and reach out to see what they may offer. Or, bring the outdoors into your home with a bouquet of fresh flowers from a local florist.
Is there anything more soothing than water gently lapping up onto the shore? Or the sound of a creek gently flowing over smooth stones? There’s a reason many spas play the sound of running water. It brings peace and tranquility. If you’re feeling keyed up, search for a body of water close to you and go take a solitary stroll.
